Chausie Kittens
Two neutered F2 males available, out of
Hattshepsut of Sarsenstone, dob 3/28/11.

Ashur (Evel Knievel), Chausie kitten extraordinaire
Ashur, aka "Evel Knievel." He's showing the rangy body of his
Jungle Cat grandfather now. This guy is still
a baby,
but he's got legs like a colt and a long cougarish muzzle. He's
going to be a very handsome cat, with still another year to grow.
Gilgamesh, F2A Chausie kitten
Gilgamesh is smaller than his brother, but he's long
and slim, with noticeable ear tufts and "night eyes"
on the backs of his ears.

Hatti's Two Available Male Kittens
F2A Generation, 4 months old

Hattshepsut of Sarsenstone delivered 4 kittens. Two are still available
--a black mackerel tabby with heavy background ticking (like mom) and one large solid black boy. Both kittens have small ear tufts. They are F2A generation kittens and 25% Jungle Cat (Felis chaus). They are playful and into everything.

When he was not quite 3 months old, Ashur the black kitten broke his hind leg while executing a long leap across the living room. I guess he thought it didn't matter how he landed. You can see a photo of him with the cast on by clicking links to photos below. The cast is off, x-rays show he's healed fully, and he's ready for a new home. He seems more careful now about jumping, which is good. If you've ever broken a limb, you know it takes a little while to get the muscles built back up again, but they do.

These are F2 generation kittens. That means they have a lot of traits that came directly from the Jungle Cat, but we don't know exactly which traits and how they will all come together at maturity. F2s are neat because they are like a wrapped gift. Chausies grow for a lot longer than traditional domestic breeds. They also develop their personalities more slowly. They go through many different personality phases--from hyperactive play machine (not interested in being petted, thank you) to their mature adult selves. As adults they are often incredibly intelligent, with a great sense of humor, and always full of surprises.

As one person put it to me, living with a Chausie is like having magic afoot in the house.

That means, don't judge a Chausie kitten the way you would judge a domestic kitten. They don't behave the same way. Their developmental rate is different, especially when they still have more than 20% JC blood. They can seem very physical and not at all intelligent as kittens because of the phases they go through. But if you have the real thing, with the pedigree to prove it, you can expect a miracle to unfold little by little. An adult Chausie is a real character, and will probably be smarter than a lot of people you know.

Chausies may jump into your pond or stomp in rain puddles (while walking on harness and leash outdoors). They might appear behind you in the shower while you have the water turned on, just to see what it's all about and enjoy the splashing. They may find a coaster and perform an elaborate tap dance on it, then bow to you with a Cheshire smile, and suddenly you realize they did it on purpose. They wanted you to notice and come over for a visit.

The stories people tell about their Chausies are endless, the creativity of the cats seemingly infinite. This is a great breed for people who like smart animals and don't mind surprises. This also is a breed for those who don't judge books by the cover. The package will unfold. The look and the personality develop slowly and the bloom comes later than in other breeds.

Incidentally, some breeders breed primarily for the ticked tabby pattern. They do that because it's the best known Chausie pattern, especially the black or brown ticked version. But that pattern actually comes from the Abyssinian breed, not from the Jungle Cat. To stick with just that pattern and color is missing the point of the breed--to preserve all the magic of the Jungle Cat in an easy to live with temperament. Those who want to know what these cats are about, everything they are about, should try one Chausie first, and don't mind about the color and pattern. Find a healthy cat from a good breeder--which means a breeder who stays informed about the breed by being active in TICA and on the Chausie Breed Committee. Try one Chausie. If you like the first one, then go for a second one in another pattern and color.

You will find that the tabby patterns have all sorts of variations, not just the classic Abyssinian ticked tabby. There are grizzled tabbies and mackerel tabbies with the heavy background ticking (from the Jungle Cat). There are color and tone variations from black and cold tone to newer colors like chocolate (which may be approved by TICA in the near future) and warm or golden tones.

They are all fascinating and beautiful. But most of all, it's about a breed with a lanky, long body and a fabulous personality full of humor. Find a good breeder. Buy the wrapped up package, then wait 18 months or more to see what's inside. Expect the unexpected.

Notice the Jungle Cat "night eyes" pattern on the backs of the ears of the tabby kittens.
We're not sure what Mr. Knievel is doing there in the foreground. Yes, that's the solid black
boy again, and he *was* wearing his leg cast at the time. It just didn't show up in the photo.
As you can see, the cast didn't stop him playing any.
